Who Should Attend?
The fall foliage workshop is targeted towards the experienced amateur photographer looking to further their knowledge of essential scenic photography fundamentals and expand their creative vision to produce more dynamic, colorful and engaging landscape images. Attendees must own and have a working knowledge of a digital SLR. Traditional film photographers are welcome to attend, however a significant portion of the instruction will focus on the digital medium.
Why Should I Attend this Workshop?
Some may wonder what the benefit is of spending several hundred dollars to perfect a hobby or profession when they could simply go out on their own for a weekend. The short of it is this: a workshop gives you the opportunity to completely immerse yourself in photography for days at a time. It will expose you to new and exciting locations, all pre-scheduled by the instructor whose knowledge of local light, weather and general conditions will allow you capture the best images possible. With nothing else on the agenda, you are free to exercise your creative vision, learn and focus on new techniques, and most importantly—put this new knowledge to work in the field. Beyond the interaction and instruction from a professional at your side, workshops also offer wonderful opportunities to interact with other photographers, feed off their creative energy, problem-solve as a group and learn from each other.
What will I learn?
This workshop will focus on fundamentals that will ultimately give attendees a greater ability to produce stunning scenic images, and more specifically, to capture the Fall season in all its color and crispness. Topics of instruction and review will include:
- Engaging the viewer through composition
- Properly exposing your digital image
- How to employ useful filters in landscape photography
- Lens selection for different photographic opportunities
- How to capture the magic light of sunrise and sunset
- Simple post-processing techniques
What is included in the workshop?
- 3 days/2 nights lodging at Solitude Mtn. Resort (located in Big Cottonwood Canyon)
- Dinner on both evenings (alcohol not included)
- Opportunity to demo the latest gear from Canon
- Transportation to and from shoot locations
What will the daily schedule consist of?
In a nutshell, we will rise early and return late. Most of the workshop will occur in the field, allowing attendees as much time as possible to practice their skills in a natural setting. There will be classroom instruction as well. As this workshop will focus greatly on the magic hours when the light is best, we will be committed to being on location before the sun rises and up to an hour after the sun sets. Daytime hours will be spent both shooting (when the light permits) and receiving classroom instruction from Adam. It will be a rather intense schedule, but most importantly, it will be educational and enjoyable!
What equipment should I bring?
- Mandatory equipment needed by each attendee is as follows:
- Digital (or film) SLR
- Tripod
- Wide Angle and telephoto lens
Optional, but highly recommended equipment:
- Cable Release
- Polarizing Filter
- Singh Ray Graduated Neutral Density Filters (attendees will receive a special discount code if pre-workshop purchase is desired)
- Laptop for image review and critique
- Portable hard-drive or media storage device for image backup
- Weather protection for camera
